1Life manages 20 venues up and down the country, consisting of leisure centres, swimming pools, golf courses, theatres and out local outreach services. 1Life is passionate about the health of the nation and giving people the tools to better themselves both physically and mentally.
A number of 1Life facilities have been recognised nationally as part of UKactive’s ‘Centre of the Year’ award for 2022 and one of its theatres has recently attracted performances from comedy superstars Jimmy Carr and Nish Kumar.
1Life is constantly reviewing how it can off er the best services possible to encourage healthier lifestyles, whether that’s by refurbishing and managing gyms at some of the biggest companies in the world or by getting two of Team GB’s superstars on board as brand ambassadors.
Plans for the next 12 months
There are several exciting projects in the pipeline to encourage people of all ages and abilities to invest in a healthier life.

Aspiring Athletes

Working alongside Max Whitlock OBE and Tom Dean MBE 1Life have launched an initiative to give 50 ‘Aspiring Athletes’ the opportunity to train at its unrivalled facilities for free and support their dreams of a career in elite sport.
The chosen athletes will also have a session with Max and Tom, where they will take part in a live demonstration, workshops and open discussion.

Health Seekers

Not everyone has aspirations of elite sport and will most likely never join a gym. However a healthy lifestyle is important for everyone, which is why 1Life has partnered with GGFit to launch Health Seekers.
Currently running at a number of pilot sites, former members are invited back for a health check using state-of-the- art InBody kit followed by a consultation with specially trained coaches. The aim of the session is to identify simple areas where people can improve their overall health outside of a gym or leisure centre, whether it’s by getting more steps in or drinking more water.

Corporate Wellness

Away from changing the world of public access leisure provision, 1Life is working with BP and dunnhumby to refurbish and manage private gyms and in turn encourage healthier lifestyles among employees.

1Life teams up with North Uttlesford Primary Care Network (PCN) to launch free 12-week exercise programme
1Life is continuing to support healthier lifestyles with yet another community health scheme in Essex, this time to improve the health of patients at four North Uttlesford GP practices: Gold Street, Crocus, Newport and Thaxted.

Thanks to funding from the IPS, 1Life's Lord Butler Fitness & Leisure Centre has partnered with North Uttlesford PCN to offer eligible patients who have been referred to the network’s Health and Wellbeing Coaches a number of free, six-month gym memberships.

The Health and Wellbeing Coaches are funded by the NHS and work with GPs to help patients make healthy lifestyle changes.

As part of the pilot scheme, which begins on 1 August, patients will be given an induction and have complete access to 1Life’s unrivalled facilities including aqua aerobics, bootcamp sessions, weight management and nutrition advisory sessions as well as indoor cycling and supervised gym sessions. Patients can also access Les Mills Body Balance via 1Life’s virtual class timetable.

As well as the memberships, the Health and Wellbeing Coaches can also refer interested patients to the centre to trial a range of weekly classes completely free of charge for three months.

The centre already has a close working relationship with the network after transforming part of its site into a Covid-19 vaccination centre. This time around, patients will have the chance to transform their physical and mental health through free exercise and expert support.

Beckie Reynolds, Contract Manager at 1Life’s Lord Butler Fitness & Leisure Centre, said: “We’re so excited to be able to offer yet another community health scheme to the people of Essex, which will open so many doors to those who truly need it. At 1Life we fully appreciate the benefits exercise can have on a person’s wellbeing but also know there can sometimes be boundaries. We’re striving to change the game when it comes to public access leisure provision and we can’t wait to welcome more of the community through our doors!”

Dr Richard Boyce, Clinical Lead for the North Uttlesford PCN said: "We are absolutely thrilled to be once again working in partnership with 1Life in Uttlesford and to be able to work together on such a practical, meaningful programme which has the potential to positively change local lives. Regular physical activity and exercise is vital for health and wellbeing. We are so excited about this partnership and the potential outcomes that could result from this. Without 1Life and the work that Beckie and her team has done to secure this funding, none of this would be possible. It will make a huge impact locally and will help us and our network further reduce health inequalities for those most in need."

Both schemes will run on a referral-only basis, with specific eligibility criteria for the free gym passes. Both schemes will be monitored closely and, if deemed successful, extended out to the wider public. It joins a list of other schemes in Essex such as Aspiring Athletes, which aims to support those dreaming of a career in elite sport and Health Seekers, which educates those looking for simple ways to improve their overall health.

To be referred, patients should either contact their surgery, which will then put them in touch with its health and wellbeing coach, or email the coaches directly: [email protected]
