case study: Imperial College London
Gym facilitates are increasingly becoming an important aspect of any college or University looking to provide students and staff with an engaging experience that promotes a healthy lifestyle.

In May 2018, Matrix Fitness were chosen by Imperial to transform a cafe area in the Ethos building into SW7; a brand new, boutique and functional training space to ensure the best quality of fitness offering for students, staff and members.

Will Hollyer, Head of Sport at Imperial College London, comments: “The rise of the boutique gyms and functional training has transformed the offering we needed to be providing. We have a membership of over 10k students and 800 staff, all who want a modern, engaging and interactive workout experience and we needed to create a leading, boutique training space to cater for this.”

Ethos is a state-of-the-art training facility, which as well as the new SW7 gym also houses their existing gym, which has had its own refurbishment September 2018, in partnership with Matrix, to modernise and improve its appeal.

Hollyer continues: “We chose to work with Matrix, with whom we have a long, successful partnership already, and their ideas for SW7 and the refurb of main gym, the equipment selection and visuals helped us to incorporate a new way of training with an inspiring design to match.

An element of their design that we’ve had great positive feedback on one wall which is completely mirrored with the London skyline, this incorporates our SW7 logo which we worked with Matrix and QPS to create makes the training space appear bigger.”

Equipment installations in the new SW7 include a bespoke Exigo rig, Matrix S-Force, Matrix S-Drive, functional training accessories, assault bikes, Ski Ergs and astro turf flooring. SW7 hosts four group exercise classes throughout the day, Monday to Friday, focusing on Conditioning, Force, Move and HIIT, all led by newly trained instructors and offering heart rate training using MyZone technology.

Listening to the fitness trends and current equipment usage and demand, upstairs in the main gym, floor space has been removed to make room for more cardio equipment, doubling treadmills as well as the free-weight area and equipment.

Julian Taylor, Marketing Director at Matrix Fitness UK adds: “Physical activity has the ability to positively influence personal wellbeing, for students and staff. But times have changed, and fitness has become more modernised, interactive and engaging.”

“It’s been an exciting project, working with the Imperial team on the launch of their boutique SW7 offering and group exercise programme as it provides a training space and fitness equipment that will engage and motivate its users whilst increasing connectivity in a time of technological advancement. Providing them with equipment that helps them set goals, track progress and celebrate achievement.”

For strength that never rests: Matrix unveils the Magnum Plate-Loaded range
Matrix Fitness, the world’s fastest-growing commercial fitness brand, announces the launch of the Magnum Plate-Loaded Range, a collection of ten advanced strength machines engineered to deliver the performance, durability and versatility that dedicated lifters demand.

With design features informed by real athlete and operator feedback, the new range offers premium functionality and adaptability to meet the evolving expectations of modern fitness facilities.

The Magnum Plate-Loaded Range redefines traditional lifts with innovative engineering and thoughtful details that support both lifter performance and facility value. Every machine in the range is purpose-built to perform under relentless use, delivering biomechanical precision, intuitive adjustments and unmatched training variety.

“Strength training is one of the fastest-growing priorities for gym members today, with over two-thirds strength training regularly and more than a third identifying muscle growth as their primary goal,” said Matthew Pengelly, Managing Director, Matrix Fitness UK. “The new Magnum Plate-Loaded Range is our answer to this demand, a no-compromise strength solution that gives our partners a serious point of differentiation while helping their members train harder, smarter and safer.”

Highlights of the Magnum Plate-Loaded Range include machines designed for precision, versatility and user comfort. The Belt Squat features oversized footplates and a stable platform for comprehensive lower-body training, while the centre belt squat attachment shifts load to the hips and legs for safer, more accessible squats. Integrated lockout mechanisms ensure smooth, controlled racking and unracking, and a robust construction supports up to 720 kg of training weight.

For upper-body development, the Elevated Biceps Curl positions the arm for peak contraction using an innovative front weight horn design that increases resistance and maximises bicep isolation. Rotating grip handles allow a full range of motion, making it ideal for serious hypertrophy. The High Row uses rotating grips and a vertical pull to precisely target the rhomboids, traps and rear deltoids, with close-positioned weight horns, built-in storage and angled thigh pads to improve workout flow and accommodate users of different heights.

Back training is further enhanced by the Incline Lever Row, which combines an incline frame, dual-grip handles and a unique floating-or-fixed handle mechanism to offer either locked-in isolation or dynamic, real-world movement. A core-stabilising footrest and ratcheting foot platform ensure ergonomic alignment for heavy lifts. The Low Row offers space-saving precision with dual-grip handles and horizontal pulling, static vertical grips for single-arm work and optimised weight horn placement to streamline the workout floor.

Lower-body and posterior chain training benefit from the Kneeling Leg Curl, which targets the hamstrings with a pivoting knee pad for easy leg transitions, ergonomic forearm supports and adjustable alignment for all body types, plus band hooks for explosive power training. The Reclining Leg Extension offers five recline angles to isolate different parts of the quadriceps in a safe, controlled movement, with self-adjusting tibia pads and an ergonomic seat for unmatched comfort. The Pendulum Squat promotes deep range of motion with its oversized, textured, multi-angle foot platform, while adjustable rear stops ensure safe progression and smart weight horn positioning maximises space efficiency.

The Standing Hip Thrust delivers targeted glute activation in a sleek, upright design, with adjustable range-of-motion and grip options for different users, and a textured footplate for stability and ease of entry. Finally, the T-Bar Row offers dual-grip handles, non-slip oversized footplates and belt squat attachment points for multiple movement options, along with optional grip anchors for even greater training variety.

All Magnum Plate-Loaded machines are available in a premium choice of frame colours, use a proprietary two-coat powder finish for durability, and include smart band attachment points to enable progressive, elastic-resistance training.

“Every detail of the Magnum Plate-Loaded Range was crafted to support the success of our customers and their members,” added Pengelly. “Our partners can count on Matrix to deliver equipment that performs as hard as they do.”
