Budget chain The Gym Group has boldly gone where no gym has gone before by investing in a Star trek-style virtual membership adviser at two of its city venues.
The interactive, life-size hologram has been installed on a trial basis to answer questions and assist with new member applications at The Gym Nottingham and The Gym Vauxhall in London. If the feedback is positive, virtual membership advisers will be rolled out at the other 41 Gym venues across the UK.
“The life-size hologram positioned at the entrance will provide members with an innovative means of sourcing information which is more personal than simply visiting our FAQ page on the website," said The Gym Group CEO and founder John Treharne.
"It will also give the impression of a personal meet and greet, with a smile to welcome every member who comes through the door."
Treharne added that the hologram was there to enhance the member experience but wouldn't have an impact of current staff levels, emphasising that the company recognises the technology is no substitute for ‘the personal touch’.
The company has undergone a major expansion in recent years and is currently awaiting Office of Fair Trading (OFT) approval for a proposed merger with budget rival Pure Gym. If successful, the new company (as yet unnamed) would comprise more than 100 gyms across the UK.
