On 23 March 2020, Leisure facilities were forced to close with an uncertain future. During lockdown, the Covid-19 Impact Report commissioned by ukactive estimated that, with restrictions in place for 6 months, Covid-19 could result in national gym visits falling short of pre pandemic projections by as many as 707,266,931.
In Blackpool, during lockdown, the Council team worked incredibly hard to create a Covid safe environment so the community would feel confident to resume their in-gym training once facilities were able to reopen, including in their Egym circuit.
In September 2019, Martin Cardwell, General Manager at Blackpool Sports Centre, oversaw the installation of an 8 piece Egym Smart Strength circuit, situated in its own dedicated area on the main gym floor. The area was branded “Express Fitness” due to the circuit requiring only 30 minutes per session to complete.
Commenting on the install, Cardwell says: “The aim was to engage a broader demographic in the benefits of strength training. These benefits are well documented, yet strength training with traditional equipment appeals to a smaller population percentage than we would like”
“We wanted to break down barriers, creating an environment where everyone would feel comfortable regardless of experience or ability. However, we did not want an “easy” exercise solution. We wanted a solution that enabled non experienced users to train safely and effectively, utilising the latest sports science. Egym provides that solution”.
Everybody who joins the gym is inducted on the Egym equipment. The automated set up and pre-installed programs apply the optimal mix of intensity and repetition to meet specified goals. This ensures that anybody, even with no previous gym experience, is able to self-manage their sessions safely and effectively on every visit.
Egym’s intelligent solution also provides regular performance feedback. Features such as BioAge, which calculates an individual’s biological age based on their achievement on a single repetition strength test, benchmarks performance, providing ongoing motivation to train.
Blackpool Council also employs the use of Egym Digital, a Branded Member Training App, which all members are encouraged to download. This assisted engagement with members during lockdown, ensuring that even though members were unable to use the Egym equipment, they were able to access Egym’s extensive ‘at home’ workout library to continue to train outside the gym. Blackpool Council were also able to set workout challenges and link to exercise classes on the Council’s Youtube channel via the app.
Cllr Maria Kirkland, Cabinet Member for Community Cohesion and Leisure at Blackpool Council says: “Egym has extended our appeal within the community, assisting in the commercial resilience of the Leisure offering during the pandemic. Following the successful introduction of the strength circuit, the Council have expanded the Egym offering by recently installing and Egym's Smart Flex and Smart Cardio equipment. The Council also plans to introduce health referrals onto Egym’s connected solutions in the New Year. Leisure Services are finding that our community are increasingly motivated to train for their sustained current and future health rather than for aesthetics, and Egym’s range of Smart training programs make the brand a perfect partner in assisting us engage our community in healthier lifestyles”.
“The Egym Smart Strength Series has been an integral part of our offer since 2019”, explains Alex. “We realised, long before the pandemic, that a well-managed, bespoke, progressive strength training provision could play an important role in the promotion of many health benefits, not just for those who wanted to become physically stronger but a much wider demographic that simply wanted to live a longer, more mobile and fulfilling life.
“Egym’s automated set up, with visual cadence coaching from the high resolution, integrated screen has enabled us to create a non-intimidating, accessible environment where anybody – even those completely new to strength training and the gym can feel comfortable and able to complete regular, effective and safe resistance programs.
The scientifically based pre-installed training plans such as Metabolic Fit, designed to tackle diabetes and the recently added, Immunity Boost designed to strengthen the body’s defences against infection, also enable our trainers to administer effective, health oriented programs that are progressive, safe and effective without having to fully understand the complex science behind the prescription. These features have enabled us to attract a much more health oriented demographic.
This market segment priorities attendance at our club because they value the contribution our provision is making to their overall quality of life through the promotion of better health. As a result, when we re-opened our doors, in the first month, 83 per cent of our Egym users returned, despite much of the industry reporting a general trepidation. Now, 9 weeks, post reopening, 86 per cent percentage have returned with an average of 4.9 visits per month.
Egym has also helped us manage a safe environment through automated on-screen messages, both via the Smart Strength Series and the Branded Members App, that reminds members to wipe down equipment and regular hand sanitisation. This all helps to improve member confidence that the club is Covid-secure and help us encourage more members to return.
Over the last 18 months, we have introduced the Trainer App and Branded Member Apps, provided as part of Egym Digital. These provisions have enabled us to provide a wraparound service of care, giving members access to advice and coaching – helping them to maintain exercise habits even when unable to visit the club in person. This provision has helped us maintain relevance to our members and meant that when we were permitted to re-open, a visit became a natural progression.
Egym has been a significant factor in our club’s post-lockdown bounce back and I am confident that the software driven solution will continue to help us build business resilience moving forwards, thanks to its focus on ‘the everyone’ and its support of health oriented goals.
Leveraging the potential of AI, we will further drive ROI and member satisfaction for our customers by creating tailored solutions that deliver real results for members and businesses alike.
EGYM is also currently expanding Wellpass into the UK through the acquisition of Hussle, a leading player in the UK corporate fitness market. With Hussle, we will take another step in our mission to make fitness and wellbeing accessible to everyone.
Fitness First to roll out EGYM Genius AI in all German studios by summer 2026
Fitness First is consistently pushing ahead with the digitalisation of its training support, and following a successful pilot phase, the company will gradually introduce the AI-supported training solution EGYM Genius AI in all of its 220 Fitness First clubs across Germany by summer 2026. As one of the country’s largest gym chains, Fitness First is setting new standards for personalised, data-based training in Germany.
Fitness First launched a pilot phase with EGYM Genius AI in selected clubs in mid-2025. At the same time, the company acquired the FIT/One fitness chain and was faced with the task of quickly bringing training support and planning quality up to Fitness First standards. EGYM Genius AI supported the training teams in particular with onboarding, the creation and continuous adaptation of high-quality, individual training plans, and helps to reduce administrative processes, leaving more time for personal support.
The introduction of Genius AI was already strategically planned before the integration of the FIT/One locations, and gained additional momentum through the expansion. The rollout is taking place gradually in clusters of several studios at a time, ensuring training quality, employee qualification and operational processes.
Johannes Maßen, Managing Director of Fitness First & COO of the LifeFit Group, says: “With the national rollout of EGYM Genius AI at Fitness First, we are taking personalised training to a new level. The AI-supported solution creates individual training plans that dynamically adapt to the goals, performance level and progress of our members – whether the focus is on strength, endurance or health. At the same time, EGYM Genius AI significantly reduces the administrative workload for our trainers, creating more space for personalised support, quality of movement and genuine motivation.
“Our mission at Fitness First is to motivate people and make fitness an integral part of their everyday lives. EGYM Genius AI supports us perfectly in this because it intelligently combines individualisation, efficiency and training quality, enabling sustainable training success.”
With the comprehensive use of EGYM Genius AI, Fitness First is strengthening the scalability of its training concepts. The solution enables the uniform implementation of quality standards and support processes across 220 locations in Germany, ensuring a consistent training experience throughout the entire network.
Philipp Roesch-Schlanderer, CEO of EGYM, says: “Fitness First's decision to roll out EGYM Genius AI across the board is a strong signal for the future viability of data-based training support. Our networked ecosystem supports operators and teams in simplifying processes, consistently scaling training quality and noticeably reducing the workload of trainers in their day-to-day work. Especially in large location networks, this helps to reliably organise high-level support while creating more time for personal work with members.
“The introduction of EGYM Genius AI in all Fitness First studios marks an important milestone in our long-standing partnership and underlines the growing importance of AI-supported training planning in modern fitness concepts.”

The new control centre of the EGYM Ecosystem goes live
An analytics-first approach for transparency that drives growth
At the heart of the EGYM Business Suite is the new analytics solution. It transforms millions of training data points from the EGYM Ecosystem into meaningful insights for operators: Which training programmes perform best? How are the BioAges of members improving? Thanks to these insights, operators can answer these questions and manage their facilities based on data: from equipment utilisation and course offerings to personnel planning. This creates a new form of transparency that not only increases efficiency and profitability but also strengthens member loyalty.
One platform. Full control.
The EGYM Business Suite brings together all existing EGYM portals into a single central access point; operators log in once and have access to all tools, data and services. From equipment management and the branded member app to marketing and training portals: everything is interconnected, clearly organised and easily scalable – whether for a gym, a physiotherapy practice or an international chain.
Thanks to the EGYM Business Suite, managing a fitness business is easier and more efficient than ever before:
● One login for all tools and services in the EGYM ecosystem
● A central dashboard with easy-to-read insights into member behaviour and equipment performance
● Quick analysis through clear visualisations with all key figures at a glance
● A configuration area for easy customisation of devices and apps – remotely and without external personnel costs
● Personnel management for viewing member status and tracking trainer activities
● A training portal for standardised induction and further training of the team
● All services in one place – from marketing and employee training to product support
“The EGYM Business Suite is the control centre of the EGYM Ecosystem. It shows how our solutions interact and what measurable added value they create for operators,” says Melissa Mohrhäuser, Senior Product Manager at EGYM. "Our goal was to reduce complexity while creating maximum transparency. With the EGYM Business Suite, operators are in control – and can drive their growth based on data."
The global rollout of the EGYM Business Suite will begin on October 29th and will occur gradually. This will help customers worldwide benefit from a smooth, supported transition; they will receive a notification from EGYM and will be able to use the new portal productively shortly after its launch.
