case study: EGYM Credited With Impressive Bounceback at Blackpool Sports Centre
Despite the challenges of managing a sports center gym during the pandemic, the membership club live at Blackpool Sports Centre is currently only 5per cent lower than pre lockdown levels and is continuing to grow steadily. With 66 per cent of members engaged with the product, the 8-station EGYM Smart Strength circuit is being credited as a major contributor to the post lockdown bounce back.
On 23 March 2020, Leisure facilities were forced to close with an uncertain future. During lockdown, the Covid-19 Impact Report commissioned by ukactive estimated that, with restrictions in place for 6 months, Covid-19 could result in national gym visits falling short of pre pandemic projections by as many as 707,266,931.
In Blackpool, during lockdown, the Council team worked incredibly hard to create a Covid safe environment so the community would feel confident to resume their in-gym training once facilities were able to reopen, including in their EGYM circuit.
In September 2019, Martin Cardwell, General Manager at Blackpool Sports Centre, oversaw the installation of an 8 piece EGYM Smart Strength circuit, situated in its own dedicated area on the main gym floor. The area was branded “Express Fitness” due to the circuit requiring only 30 minutes per session to complete.
Commenting on the install, Cardwell says: “The aim was to engage a broader demographic in the benefits of strength training. These benefits are well documented, yet strength training with traditional equipment appeals to a smaller population percentage than we would like”
“We wanted to break down barriers, creating an environment where everyone would feel comfortable regardless of experience or ability. However, we did not want an “easy” exercise solution. We wanted a solution that enabled non experienced users to train safely and effectively, utilising the latest sports science. EGYM provides that solution”.
Everybody who joins the gym is inducted on the EGYM equipment. The automated set up and pre-installed programs apply the optimal mix of intensity and repetition to meet specified goals. This ensures that anybody, even with no previous gym experience, is able to self-manage their sessions safely and effectively on every visit.
EGYM’s intelligent solution also provides regular performance feedback. Features such as BioAge, which calculates an individual’s biological age based on their achievement on a single repetition strength test, benchmarks performance, providing ongoing motivation to train.
Blackpool Council also employs the use of EGYM Digital, a Branded Member Training App, which all members are encouraged to download. This assisted engagement with members during lockdown, ensuring that even though members were unable to use the EGYM equipment, they were able to access EGYM’s extensive ‘at home’ workout library to continue to train outside the gym. Blackpool Council were also able to set workout challenges and link to exercise classes on the Council’s Youtube channel via the app.
Cllr Maria Kirkland, Cabinet Member for Community Cohesion and Leisure at Blackpool Council says: “EGYM has extended our appeal within the community, assisting in the commercial resilience of the Leisure offering during the pandemic. Following the successful introduction of the strength circuit, the Council have expanded the EGYM offering by recently installing and EGYM's Smart Flex and Smart Cardio equipment. The Council also plans to introduce health referrals onto EGYM’s connected solutions in the New Year. Leisure Services are finding that our community are increasingly motivated to train for their sustained current and future health rather than for aesthetics, and EGYM’s range of Smart training programs make the brand a perfect partner in assisting us engage our community in healthier lifestyles”.

case study: EGYM Supports Impressive Member Bounce Back at Club Kingswood
Following Covid-19 enforced lockdown, on March 23, 2020 – July 25, 2020, Club Kingswood, an independent 2,800 member multi-facility club in Essex, froze all of its gym memberships with no charge, uncertain of what the effect would be on the future of its membership. Fortunately, 9 weeks post reopening, over 85 per cent of gym members have returned. Here General Manager, Alex Owen, explains the important role EGYM has played in the club’s impressive bounce back.
“The EGYM Smart Strength Series has been an integral part of our offer since 2019”, explains Alex. “We realised, long before the pandemic, that a well-managed, bespoke, progressive strength training provision could play an important role in the promotion of many health benefits, not just for those who wanted to become physically stronger but a much wider demographic that simply wanted to live a longer, more mobile and fulfilling life.
“EGYM’s automated set up, with visual cadence coaching from the high resolution, integrated screen has enabled us to create a non-intimidating, accessible environment where anybody – even those completely new to strength training and the gym can feel comfortable and able to complete regular, effective and safe resistance programs.
The scientifically based pre-installed training plans such as Metabolic Fit, designed to tackle diabetes and the recently added, Immunity Boost designed to strengthen the body’s defences against infection, also enable our trainers to administer effective, health oriented programs that are progressive, safe and effective without having to fully understand the complex science behind the prescription. These features have enabled us to attract a much more health oriented demographic.
This market segment priorities attendance at our club because they value the contribution our provision is making to their overall quality of life through the promotion of better health. As a result, when we re-opened our doors, in the first month, 83 per cent of our EGYM users returned, despite much of the industry reporting a general trepidation. Now, 9 weeks, post reopening, 86 per cent percentage have returned with an average of 4.9 visits per month.
EGYM has also helped us manage a safe environment through automated on-screen messages, both via the Smart Strength Series and the Branded Members App, that reminds members to wipe down equipment and regular hand sanitisation. This all helps to improve member confidence that the club is Covid-secure and help us encourage more members to return.
Over the last 18 months, we have introduced the Trainer App and Branded Member Apps, provided as part of EGYM Digital. These provisions have enabled us to provide a wraparound service of care, giving members access to advice and coaching – helping them to maintain exercise habits even when unable to visit the club in person. This provision has helped us maintain relevance to our members and meant that when we were permitted to re-open, a visit became a natural progression.
EGYM has been a significant factor in our club’s post-lockdown bounce back and I am confident that the software driven solution will continue to help us build business resilience moving forwards, thanks to its focus on ‘the everyone’ and its support of health oriented goals.

Testimonial
“EGYM has been a game changer for the business. The automated functionality is perfectly suited to those new to exercise, the deconditioned and seniors, plus high performance athletes. Also, the performance feedback, with regards to strength and imbalance testing, is something I couldn’t glean from other means with the same level of simplicity and reliability. I find this functionality absolutely invaluable in my rehabilitation work. It also motivates clients because they are provided with regular, evidence that their effort is translating into the achievement of specified goals.”

Magicline and EGYM agree on strategic partnership
Magicline and EGYM agree on strategic partnership
EGYM and Magicline enter into a strategic partnership entirely in line with their open platforms and now aim to provide their customers with an interface of both companies at no additional cost to gym operators.
"We know that the fitness industry has been waiting a long time for EGYM and Magicline to join forces. Together, we will now create synergies through the cooperation of our teams to maximize customer value. There are so many common ideas to promote digitalization in our industry - let's tackle it," said Daniel Hanelt, CEO of Magicline.
By connecting the two systems, the cooperation will enable trainers to seamlessly access the "EGYM Connected Training Floor".
A number of basic features, such as member transfer/synchronization, check-ins and RFID transfer, will be available as early as next month. Other features - such as booking classes for studio members via the EGYM Branded Member App or controlling EGYM+ and EGYM Smart Strength devices - will follow successively in the coming months.
The request to activate the interface will be made through the Magicline App Store. All customers will receive regular information about upcoming innovations and also information about the conversion process itself. Magicline will also integrate a software interface to EGYM subsidiary qualitrain.
Philipp Roesch-Schlanderer, CEO of EGYM, says: "Our partnership with Magicline fits seamlessly into our 'best of breed' approach: operators should always have the freedom to combine those providers that are optimal for their particular purpose, e.g. EGYM for the training space with all the benefits of free choice of hardware and software, and Magicline for membership management."
The concluded partnership is just the beginning of the cooperation between the two German FitTech heavyweights EGYM and Magicline. The goal is to jointly drive innovation and further digitalize the fitness market. This is the reason why both EGYM and Magicline have created open ecosystems. Innovations and developments that benefit customers and allow them freedom of choice in terms of the solutions they use.

Member Loyalty is the key to success
Member Loyalty is the key to success
How do we connect our gym equipment with consumers at home? How do we design holistic workout experiences in and outside the gym? And how do we bring people into the gym and sync those workouts back into apps so members can track their workouts digitally?
Martin Seibold, CEO of LifeFit Group and EGYM co-founder and CEO Philipp Roesch-Schlanderer, discussed current industry trends and the recently intensified collaboration between the two companies during a special edition of EGYM Experts in Munich. We video recorded the conversation.
Both company leaders were relieved that, after two years in crisis mode, they were finally looking forward again. The industry is currently undergoing a significant professionalisation process. Digitalisation is an essential element, as is specialisation.
Martin Seibold: "In the past, there was, to put it simply, a single offering across the fitness industry. Today, there are numerous types of different clubs. The Life Fit Group is a growth platform that closely observes the market segments in which trends are developing. Where is the biggest growth potential? That's where we're going with our brands!" According to Philipp Roesch-Schlanderer, the clear focus is on member needs: "In the past, the fitness industry was quite sales-oriented; now, member retention and loyalty play a much more important role."
The two CEOs recapped the process of implementing the first EGYM equipment at Fitness First in Mannheim to the now nearly completed roll-out in almost all 50+ clubs of the brand, which belongs to the LifeFit Group. According to Martin Seibold, "We first had to get our employees into the digital headspace of this future-focused offering." The EGYM Trainer App, with its task chains, provided very valuable services when it came to addressing members in the right and standardised way. Now, it is up and running, "and we have it in our DNA!" says Martin Seibold. This was the right time to complete the EGYM Ecosystem with the Smart Strength machines after already successfully using the EGYM apps for trainers and members. Meanwhile, many new customers also come to Fitness First via EGYM's corporate fitness network qualitrain.
Looking to the future, Martin Seibold and Philipp Roesch-Schlanderer expressed their wish that the industry should work together to achieve greater success. It's not about taking something from the other but about building "the ideal world for gym members" (Philipp Roesch-Schlanderer). The fact that competitors who were not quite as innovative also benefited from this cooperative approach was all right because, says Martin Seibold, "at the end of the day, we all get up and want people to get healthier. And in the process, our two companies will also do their part and be successful."

EGYM: A digital ecosystem that works for everyone
EGYM: A digital ecosystem that works for everyone
EGYM has been pioneering the connected gym floor for more than a decade, partnering with operators and other third-party integrations, to create a free-flowing training environment that places the member at the very centre of the experience. This enables gym operators to maintain relevance in a world that is becoming increasingly managed by the consumer from a device that sits in the palm of their hand.
Over the last decade, EGYM has been working with its network of global operators to develop an entire digital ecosystem that makes exercising smarter, more efficient, more effective and more measurable for everyone.
In 2021, we completed this mission with the launch of Fitness Hub, a gym floor centrepiece that enables touchless, self-serve, onboarding and performance tracking.
Fitness Hub seamlessly connects to EGYM’s in-club Smart Strength Series and Smart Flex, automating programming and progression, equipment set up and regular performance feedback. Training and performance data is collated and presented back to the member via EGYM Digital, accessible anytime from anywhere via a connected device, creating an environment that extends engagement beyond the walls of the physical training facility.
At Fibo 2022, EGYM launched its new Open Mode, to break down even more barriers and extended opportunities for individuals who need to apply highly bespoke exercise applications to utilise selected components of the EGYM Smart Strength Series without the pre-programmed guidance. This enables components of the EGYM Smart Strength Series to be built into free gym sessions, without the user having to complete the whole circuit.
Through its connected gym floor training and wider digital ecosystem, EGYM provides a solution to growing consumer demand for a highly personalised experience which is largely self-managed and based on real-time performance data that is accessible anytime, anywhere.
